Sono entrato
in contatto via e-mail con Sverre Daehli, chitarra e voce dei norvegesi
Audiopain, e dopo aver ascoltato ed apprezzato il loro “The Traumatizer”,
gli ho chiesto la disponibilità per un’intervista. Sverre si è
dimostrato gentilissimo, rispondendo nel giro di un’ora a tutte le
domande e fornendo qualche anticipazione sul nuovo album, tuttora in
fase di registrazione.
Ciao Sverre! Potresti rapidamente presentare la
tua band ai nostri lettori? Quando si sono formati gli Audiopain? Chi
sono i componenti del gruppo?
Ciao! Gli Audiopain hanno preso forma nel tardo
1996, o anno 10, come lo chiamiamo noi, e fin da allora il gruppo è
stato composto da me, Petter e Bjarne, con lo scopo di suonare thrash
metal aggressivo di vecchia scuola. Noi usiamo basso, batteria,
chitarra, voce, alcool e pensieri perversi per realizzare il volere del
signore Audiopain. Obey!
Ho sentito dire che siete alle prese con le
registrazioni di un nuovo album: puoi introdurci questo nuovo lavoro? Ci
sono differenze tra il nuovo materiale e quello contenuto in “The
Traumatizer”? Quando uscirà il disco?
Bene, avrà più o meno lo stesso stile e le stesse
sonorità, ma probabilmente sarà più pesante. Non ci saranno insomma
grosse sorprese, ma credo contenga alcune buone canzoni che ti
piaceranno, forse anche di più rispetto alle canzoni di “The Traumatizer”.
L’uscita era prevista per il mese di ottobre, ma siccome non abbiamo
ancora completato le registrazioni e il mio calendario riporta la data
del primo novembre, davvero non mi pare che ciò sia successo…(cioè che
sia uscito ad ottobre, eheheh. NdR)
Parlando di “The Traumatizer, mi piace molto il
sound di quell’album, perché secondo me rispecchia alla perfezione la
vostra attitudine e ben si adatta alla vostra proposta musicale:
registrato con una buona qualità ma allo stesso tempo non pulito come
molte mega-produzioni tipiche dei nostri giorni. Siete soddisfatti di
come suona quel disco? Il nuovo album sarà registrato presso lo stesso
studio?
Yeah, siamo piuttosto soddisfatti. Come è avvenuto
tutte le volte in cui abbiamo registrato qualcosa, abbiamo totalmente
perso tutti i punti di vista oggettivi nel momento in cui l’abbiamo
completato, ma dopotutto siamo più o meno contenti di come è venuto
fuori. “The Traumatizer” è stato registrato nel nostro studio, dove
proviamo, e sapevamo esattamente cosa potevamo tirarne fuori.
L’equipaggiamento in realtà non era di altissimo livello quando
registrammo, ma da allora è migliorato e il nostro prossimo disco sarà
nuovamente registrato lì. Noi condividiamo le stesse idee riguardo a
come debbano essere i suoni: niente alta tecnologia, niente suoni puliti
e brillanti, niente schifosi trigger!
Cosa vi aspettate dal nuovo album? Pensi che possa
rappresentare la vostra “consacrazione”? Com’è la vostra situazione lì
in Norvegia?
Audiopain è un nome ben noto nell’underground
della scena metal norvegese. Abbiamo suonato in tutti i grandi festival,
condividendo il palco con grandissimi nomi, per cui un fan del metal
difficilmente ci ha persi…hehe! Comunque noi non cerchiamo un successo
clamoroso o la fama, quindi per noi la prossima release rappresenta più
che altro qualcosa che a noi piace e speriamo possa piacere anche ai
nostri fans. Non abbiamo assolutamente alcun interesse ad essere
scoperti dalle masse. Non ci apprezzerebbero, in ogni caso, perché non
abbiamo quell’approccio alla musica che la maggior parte della gente
cerca.
Com’è strutturata la fase di songwriting? Come
nasce la tipica canzone degli Audiopain?
Uno tra me e Petter scrive la musica, dopodichè la
proviamo, l’arrangiamo e ri-arrangiamo tutti insieme fino a quando non
siamo soddisfatti; poi decidiamo dove inserire le parti vocali ed infine
scriviamo i testi.
Capitolo live: come considerate l’esperienza dal
vivo? E’ importante per voi? Avremo la possibilità di vedervi qui in
Italia l’anno prossimo?
Sul palco siamo un gruppo che suona un thrash
onesto e sfrontato. Nessuna enorme produzione da circo con spettacoli
pirotecnici, niente face-painting nè niente del genere. Ci è stato detto
che ci comportiamo bene ogni volta, e la gente sembra apprezzare quando
suoniamo. Consideriamo importante suonare dal vivo e la maggior parte
delle nostre canzoni è scritta avendo bene in mente che dovrà essere
suonata su un palco da noi tre. E infine si, saremmo lieti di venire a
suonare in Italia! Naturalmente!
In passato avete collaborato con Fenriz
(batterista dei Darkthrone, NdR), il quale ha scritto il testo di un
vostro pezzo apparso in “Revel In Desecration”: è possibile che in
futuro collaboriate nuovamente con lui?
Esatto, Fenriz ha scritto il testo della canzone
“Infuriation Scalp”, ma non abbiamo piani per ulteriori collaborazioni.
Lui è qui in giro, quindi chissà…? Forse un giorno.
Voi non avete un sito Internet e rispetto questa
scelta, ma non credi che potrebbe garantirvi più possibilità per farvi
conoscere? I fans italiani in che modo possono contattarvi e richiedere

you quickly introduce your band to our readers? When was Audiopain born?
Who are the components of the band?
Hi! Audiopain found its shape in late 1996, or year 10 as we say, and
has since then been forcing Petter, Bjarne and myself to play aggressive
old-scoolish thrash metal. We use bass, drums, guitars, vocals, alcohol
and perverse thoughts to realize master Audiopains will. Obey!
I heard you are
recording a new album: can you introduce this new work? Are there any
differences between the new material and “The Traumatizer” one? When
will the album be out?
Well, it is more or less the same style and sound, but maybe more heavy.
It is no big surprices, but hopefully some good songs you will like,
maybe even more than the songs on ‘The Traumatizer’. It was meant to be
out in October this year, but as we are not finished with it yet, and my
calendar says 1st of November today, I really don’t see that happen...
Talking about “The
Traumatizer”, I like a lot the sound of that album, because it was
perfect for your musical attitude in my opinion: recorded with a good
quality but at the same time not clean like a lot of mega-productions
that we can hear today. Are you satisfied about it? Will the new album
be recorded in the same studio?
Yeah, we are pretty satisfied with it. As always when we have recorded
something, we have totally lost all objective viewpoints by the time it
is all finished, but after all we are more or less comfortable with it.
It was recorded in our own studio, where we rehearse, so we know exactly
what we can get out of it. The equippement was really not of the highest
standard when we recorded it, but it has improved since then, and our
new record is also recorded in this place. We all share the same ideals
when it comes to how the sound should be like; no hi-tec, polished,
trigger shit!
What do you expect from this
new album? Do you think it could be your “consecration”? How is your
situation there in Norway?
Audiopain is a well known name in the underground of the Norwegian metal
scene. We have played all the biggest festivals, and with so many big
names, that a metal fan couldn’t possibly have missed us...hehe. But we
really don’t seek any break-through or fame, so for us this next release
is more something we know we like, and hope our fans like, that we want
to release and share. Not a hope to be discovered by the masses. They
wouldn’t know anyway, as we don’t have that approach to music that most
people search for.
How is the phase
of songwriting structured? How is the typical Audiopain song created?
Either Petter or myself write the music, then we share it at rehearsals,
and then we arrange and re-arrange it in company until we are satisfied,
and then we find out where the vocals must be, and then finally write
the lyrics.
Chapter live: how do you
consider the live experience? Is it something important to you? Will we
have the possibility to see you here in Italy, the next year?
We are a straight forward thrash act on stage. No huge circus-like
production with pyro or facepaint or anything. We have been told that we
deliver the goods everytime, and people seem to like it when we play. We
concider it important to play concerts, and most of our songs are
written with that in mind that it shall be played on stage by the three
of us. And finally yes, we would be pleased to come and play in Italy!
Of course!
I heard about a
collaboration with Fenriz in the period of “Revel In Desecration”, he
wrote the lyrics to a song: is it possibile a future strong
collaboration with him?
Yes, Fenriz wrote the lyrics to the song ‘Infuriation Scalp’, but we
have no plans to collaborate more. He is still around, so who knows...?
Maybe some day.
You don’t have a
web site and I respect this choice, but don’t you think that a web site
could give yoy more possibilities to be known? How the Italian fans can
contact you and order your issues?
Yes I think a website would spread our name more. Our Italian friends
can either send us a mail at

search for a distributor in Italy for our new release, and to judge by
the responds from Italy lately, I think it would be best if we found
